Mediumship is an important part of the spiritual work of Pakenham Spiritualist Centre.
During our regular services, visiting and resident mediums demonstrate their connection with Spirit by sharing information, memories, impressions and messages intended to provide evidence of survival — the Spiritualist understanding that consciousness and the soul continue beyond physical death.
For many people, mediumship can bring comfort, reflection, reassurance and a renewed sense of connection with loved ones who have passed.
You do not need to have experienced mediumship before to attend. You are equally welcome to receive a message, observe the demonstration, or simply experience the atmosphere of the service.
What Is Mediumship?
Mediumship is the practice through which a medium seeks to communicate with those who have passed from physical life into Spirit.
Within Spiritualism, the medium is understood to act as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds.
Rather than simply offering general advice, the medium seeks to provide recognisable details that may help the recipient identify the person being communicated with. These might include:
- personality and character;
- memories or shared experiences;
- relationships and family connections;
- places or significant events;
- interests, habits or mannerisms;
- circumstances surrounding their life; or
- other details meaningful to the recipient.
These pieces of information are often referred to as evidence of survival.
Only after establishing a connection may the medium also share a message, thought or reflection associated with the person in Spirit.
What Is “Evidence of Survival”?
One of the foundations of Spiritualist mediumship is the principle that communication should contain more than a comforting statement.
The medium seeks to provide information that has personal meaning for the recipient and may demonstrate that the identity, personality and memories of the person who has passed continue beyond physical death.
No single message or experience can determine what another person should believe.
Instead, Spiritualism encourages each individual to listen, reflect and decide for themselves what meaning — if any — they take from the experience.
What Happens During a Demonstration of Mediumship?
During our services, one or more mediums may work from the platform or move amongst the congregation.
The medium will usually describe what they are sensing and ask whether someone present can recognise the information.
When a connection is recognised, the medium will continue to provide further information and, where appropriate, a message from Spirit.
There is nothing that you need to prepare beforehand.
Simply listen and remain open to the experience.
Will I Receive a Message?
Possibly — but it cannot be guaranteed.
Mediums do not generally choose who will receive a message. They work with the connections they experience during the demonstration.
Attending a PSC service therefore does not guarantee that you will personally receive a message.
If you do not receive one, you can still gain a great deal from observing the evidence, teachings and experiences shared with others.
Sometimes a message given to another person may even contain a thought or reflection that resonates with your own journey.
You Are Always in Control
If a medium approaches you and you would prefer not to receive a message, it is perfectly acceptable to say so.
Participation is always your choice.
Spiritualism places great importance on free will and personal responsibility. A medium should not tell you how you must live your life, make decisions for you or create fear or dependency.
Messages may offer comfort, encouragement or something to reflect upon, but your choices remain your own.
Every Medium Works Differently
No two mediums work in exactly the same way.
Some may receive images or symbols.
Others may sense names, personalities, memories, emotions or physical characteristics.
Some describe the presence of Spirit visually, while others experience communication as thoughts, feelings or an inner knowing.
Because each medium has their own way of working, every demonstration has its own character.
This variety is part of what makes attending different PSC services interesting and unique.
Mediumship Is Not About Predicting Your Future
The primary purpose of Spiritualist mediumship at PSC is communication and evidence of survival, rather than fortune telling.
Messages may sometimes encourage reflection on your life or circumstances, but they should not remove your responsibility to make your own decisions.
Important medical, legal, financial or other professional decisions should always be made using appropriate qualified advice.
A Respectful Connection
Mediumship can involve memories of people deeply loved and missed.
For this reason, we aim to ensure that demonstrations are conducted with sensitivity, compassion and respect for both the recipient and the person being communicated with.
There may be laughter.
There may be emotion.
There may be moments of recognition that are deeply personal.
There may also be messages that require time to understand or reflect upon.
Each experience is different.
Mediumship at Our Regular Services
Demonstrations of mediumship form part of most regular Pakenham Spiritualist Centre services.
Our mediums and guest mediums change throughout the year, allowing visitors to experience different styles and approaches to spiritual communication.
Spiritual Healing: 1:15 pm – 1:55 pm
Main Service: 2:00 pm – approximately 4:00 pm
Location: Officer Public Hall, 16–18 Tivendale Road, Officer, Victoria
The service is followed by afternoon tea, conversation and community fellowship.
Do I Need to Be a Spiritualist?
No.
You are welcome whether you have held spiritual beliefs for many years, are exploring mediumship for the first time, are uncertain about what you believe, or are simply curious.
We do not ask you to accept something simply because someone else believes it.
Listen.
Observe.
Question.
Reflect.
And allow your own understanding to develop.

Mediumship is difficult to fully understand simply by reading about it.
Sometimes the best way to explore it is simply to experience a demonstration for yourself.
Come with an open mind, listen to the evidence presented and decide for yourself what meaning the experience holds.
Spirit does not ask us to surrender our questions. It invites us to explore them.
